How to Delete Placeholder Posts in WordPress

Remove Hello world, sample pages and theme demo content from WordPress by hand or in bulk, what to check first, and how to stop it coming back.

To remove placeholder posts in WordPress, open Posts, then All Posts in your dashboard, tick the sample entries such as "Hello world!", choose Move to Trash from the Bulk actions menu, then open the Trash view and delete them permanently. Demo pages, sample products and custom post type entries added by a theme are removed the same way from their own menus. The real work is finding every piece of demo content and making sure it does not come back.

This guide covers where placeholder content comes from, how to clear it by hand or in bulk, what to check before you delete anything, and how to stop themes and plugins from recreating it.

What counts as placeholder content

Placeholder content is any post, page or entry that exists only to show what a fresh install, a theme or a plugin looks like. It was never written for your visitors. A new WordPress install creates a few items on its own, and a theme demo import can add dozens more.

How to delete placeholder posts in WordPress, step by step

  1. Log in to your dashboard. Use an account with the Administrator or Editor role, otherwise you may not see posts written by other users.
  2. Open Posts, then All Posts. Use the search box or the author and date filters to narrow the list to sample entries.
  3. Select the placeholder posts. Tick each checkbox, or tick the header checkbox to select the whole page of results.
  4. Choose Move to Trash. Pick it from the Bulk actions dropdown and click Apply.
  5. Empty the Trash. Click the Trash link above the table, select the items and choose Delete Permanently, or click Empty Trash.

The official Posts screen documentation describes each of these controls. Repeat the same steps under Pages for the Sample Page and any demo pages.

If you skip the last step, WordPress clears the Trash on its own schedule. By default, trashed items are removed after 30 days, a value set by the EMPTY_TRASH_DAYS constant described in the WordPress wp-config documentation (checked 2026).

The main points of this guide at a glance.

Check these before you delete anything

Deleting demo content is low risk, but a few minutes of checking avoids broken pages afterwards.

Take a backup

Export the database or take a full backup through your host first. Permanent deletion cannot be undone from the dashboard, and demo imports sometimes reuse IDs that real content depends on.

Look for layouts you still need

Theme demos often hold the only copy of a header, footer or landing page layout. If you built a real page by editing a demo page, that page is no longer placeholder content. Save useful sections as reusable templates or patterns before you clear the rest.

Check menus and widgets

Demo menus usually point at demo pages. Once those pages are gone, the menu items disappear or leave gaps. Review Appearance, then Menus (or the Site Editor on block themes) after the cleanup.

Note any URLs that were indexed

If the site was live while demo content was public, search engines may have indexed it. Make a list of those URLs so you can redirect them to a relevant page or let them return a 404 and drop out of the index naturally.

Removing placeholder content in bulk

Clicking through the dashboard is fine for a handful of posts. When a demo import has added hundreds of entries, a faster method saves time.

Raise the number of items per page

Open Screen Options at the top of the Posts screen and increase the number of items shown. You can then select far more entries with one checkbox and trash them in a single bulk action.

Use WP-CLI

If you have shell access, WP-CLI is the cleanest option. The wp post delete command accepts one or many post IDs, and its force flag skips the Trash entirely. List the IDs first with wp post list, filtered by post type, author or date, so you only remove what you meant to remove. Run it on a staging copy before production.

Be careful with bulk deletion plugins

Bulk deletion plugins can filter by date, category or post type, which is handy on large sites. Install one only for the cleanup, check that it is actively maintained, and remove it afterwards. Every extra plugin is code that needs updating and can slow the admin down.

Custom post types and demo data from plugins

Many themes and plugins register their own content types: portfolio items, team members, testimonials, events, products, forms. Their sample entries do not appear under Posts. Look down the left admin menu for each content type and clear the samples from there.

For a WooCommerce store, sample products also create product categories, tags and attribute terms. Delete the products first, then tidy the leftover terms under Products, so empty categories do not show up in navigation or filters.

Page builders can also store demo templates in their own libraries. These are not visible on the front end, but cleaning them out keeps the editor tidy for whoever maintains the site next.

Stop placeholder posts from coming back

If sample content reappears after you delete it, something is recreating it.

  • Theme setup wizards. Some themes offer to import demo content on activation or after an update. Skip or close the wizard and read the theme's documentation for a setting that turns the prompt off.
  • Plugin activation routines. A few plugins add sample entries the first time they are activated, and again if they are deactivated and reactivated.
  • Staging pushes. If a staging site still holds demo content, pushing it to production restores everything you just deleted. Clean staging first.
  • Multisite templates. On a multisite network, each new site gets default content unless the network is set up otherwise.

Why the cleanup matters

Placeholder posts look careless to visitors, but the bigger cost is to search and site quality. Sample posts are thin pages with no real purpose. They show up in archives, category pages, the RSS feed and the XML sitemap, which wastes crawl attention and can surface "Hello world!" in search results for your brand name.

Demo imports also pull in large images and extra database rows that do nothing except add weight to backups and queries. Removing them is a small, easy part of keeping a site fast, alongside the work covered in our Core Web Vitals service.

How to Delete Placeholder Posts in WordPress: further points, a Codeeo diagram
A short summary of the points covered further down.

A quick launch checklist

  1. Backup taken and stored off the server.
  2. "Hello world!", its sample comment and the Sample Page deleted.
  3. Privacy Policy page written or replaced.
  4. Uncategorized renamed or replaced as the default category.
  5. Demo posts, pages, menus and widgets removed or rewritten.
  6. Custom post type samples cleared from every admin menu.
  7. Trash emptied for posts, pages and products.
  8. Sitemap and RSS feed checked for leftover sample URLs.
  9. Any indexed demo URLs redirected or left to return 404.

Working through this list on a few sites makes it routine. When a site has years of mixed demo and real content, a structured website audit is often the faster way to see what to keep, merge or remove.

Frequently asked questions

Yes.

The "Hello world!" post is sample content created by every new WordPress install and nothing in WordPress depends on it. Delete it from Posts, then All Posts, and empty the Trash. Its sample comment is removed with it. If the site was already live and the post was indexed, you can redirect its URL to your blog page or simply let it return a 404.
