Install WPForms Lite, build a form, set up notifications and confirmations, embed it on a page, stop spam, and know when the free version is no longer enough.

WPForms Lite is the free version of the WPForms plugin, and it lets you build contact forms, simple surveys and sign up forms in WordPress with a drag and drop builder, no code needed. You install it from the Plugins screen, build a form from a template, set who receives the email notification, and drop the form onto any page with the WPForms block. The setup takes minutes; the parts that need more thought are email delivery, spam protection and what happens to each lead after it arrives.
This guide covers installation, building and embedding a form, the settings people often miss, and when the free version stops being enough.
What WPForms Lite does well
Forms are how most business websites turn a visit into a conversation. A contact form, a quote request, an appointment request or a newsletter sign up is often the only point where an anonymous visitor becomes a lead you can follow up.
WPForms Lite covers the common cases with little effort. According to its listing in the WordPress plugin directory, it includes a visual form builder, ready made templates, instant email notifications and built in spam protection, with support for Google reCAPTCHA, hCaptcha and Cloudflare Turnstile. Features such as multi page forms, file uploads and conditional logic are part of the paid Pro tiers.
How to install WPForms Lite
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
- Search for WPForms. The free listing is published by WPForms and is shown as WPForms Lite in the directory.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
A new WPForms item appears in the dashboard menu. Before going further, make sure you installed the genuine plugin and not a similarly named one. Check the author name and the number of active installs on the listing.
How to build your first form
- Go to WPForms > Add New.
- Name the form something you will recognize later, such as "Contact, main site" or "Appointment request".
- Choose a template. The Simple Contact Form template is a sensible start for most sites, or pick Blank Form to build from scratch.
- Drag fields from the left panel into the form preview on the right. Common fields include Name, Email, Phone, Dropdown, Checkboxes and Paragraph Text.
- Click any field to edit its label, placeholder and description. Use labels that say exactly what you want, such as "Work email" or "Preferred appointment date".
- Tick Required on fields you cannot do without. Keep this to the minimum, because every required field lowers the number of people who finish the form.
- Click Save.
Keep the form short
The most common form problem we see is asking for too much too early. A first contact form rarely needs more than name, email or phone, and one open question. Collect the rest on the call. If you genuinely need detail up front, such as for a quote, explain why in a short line above the form.

Set up notifications and confirmations
Two settings decide what happens after someone clicks submit. Both live under Settings inside the form builder.
Notifications
Notifications are the emails WPForms sends when a form is submitted. By default the email goes to the site admin address. Change it to the inbox that actually handles enquiries, and add a second address if a colleague covers for you. Use smart tags to put the visitor's name in the subject line, so enquiries are easy to scan in a busy inbox.
Confirmations
The confirmation is what the visitor sees after submitting. You can show a message, load a page or redirect to a URL. A dedicated thank you page is usually the best choice, because it gives a clear next step and makes conversion tracking in analytics and ad platforms straightforward.
Make sure the emails arrive
Many WordPress sites send mail through the server's default mail function, and those messages often land in spam or are blocked by the host altogether. If your test notification does not arrive, the form is not the problem. Connect WordPress to a proper sending service through an SMTP plugin and authenticate your domain with SPF and DKIM records. Test again after every change of host.
How to add the form to a page
- Open the page or post where the form should appear, such as your contact page.
- Click the + block inserter and search for WPForms.
- Insert the block and pick your form from the dropdown.
- Update or publish the page.
You can also use the Embed button inside the form builder, which lets you pick an existing page or create a new one with the form already in place. For page builders and widget areas, WPForms provides a shortcode for each form that you can paste wherever shortcodes are accepted.
Stop spam before it fills your inbox
Spam protection is on by default, which handles a lot of automated junk. If you still get spam, add a CAPTCHA from the plugin's settings. Cloudflare Turnstile and hCaptcha are less intrusive for real visitors than older image puzzles. Avoid making every visitor solve a puzzle unless spam is genuinely heavy.
WPForms Lite compared with the paid version
| Need | WPForms Lite | Paid WPForms |
|---|---|---|
| Contact and simple request forms | Yes | Yes |
| Email notifications and confirmations | Yes | Yes |
| Spam protection and CAPTCHA | Yes | Yes |
| Conditional logic | No | Yes |
| Multi page forms | No | Yes |
| File uploads | No | Yes |
Feature lists change between releases, so check the current plugin listing before you decide. A simple test: if your forms only collect a name, contact details and a message, Lite is usually enough. If you need forms that branch based on answers, accept documents or feed a CRM directly, you will outgrow it.
Where submissions should go next
A form is only the front door. The real question is what happens to each lead. For many small businesses an email to a shared inbox is fine. As volume grows, leads get missed, replies are slow and nobody can tell which page or campaign produced the enquiry.
At that point it is worth sending submissions straight into a CRM, tagging them with the page and campaign source, and triggering an automatic acknowledgement. Our sales automation work connects website forms to CRMs so every lead is logged, assigned and followed up. On the HMS website, for example, appointment requests are part of a content managed site built around treatments and professionals.

Common mistakes with WordPress forms
- Never testing the live form. Submit a real test after launch and after every plugin or hosting change.
- Notifications going to an unwatched inbox. The default admin address is often a developer or an old employee.
- No privacy notice. Add a short line linking to your privacy policy and explain how you will use the details.
- Too many required fields. Each one costs completions.
- Forms that break on mobile. Check field sizes, keyboard types and the submit button on a real phone.
- No tracking. Without a thank you page or form event in analytics, you cannot tell which pages or ads bring enquiries.
If your forms are working but leads still slip through, the issue is usually the website around them or the process after them.
