Klaviyo Shopify Integration: Setup, Flows and Common Mistakes

How the Klaviyo Shopify integration works, how to set it up with onsite tracking, the first five flows to build, and the mistakes that hold stores back.

Klaviyo connects to Shopify through an official app that pulls your customer, product and order data into Klaviyo, so you can send email and SMS based on what each shopper actually did: viewed a product, abandoned a cart, bought once and never returned. The connection itself is quick. The value comes afterwards, from building a handful of automated flows and segments that run every day without anyone pressing send.

This guide explains how the integration works, how to set it up step by step, which flows to build first, and the mistakes that stop stores getting results from it.

Why connect Klaviyo to Shopify

Shopify can send basic marketing emails, but Klaviyo is built around behavior. Once connected, every profile in Klaviyo carries that shopper's browsing events, orders, products and subscription status. That lets you send messages that are relevant to one person instead of the same newsletter to everyone.

  • One customer view. Orders, browsing activity and email and SMS engagement sit on the same profile.
  • Automated flows. Welcome series, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post purchase and win back messages trigger on their own.
  • Segmentation. Group customers by what they bought, how often, how recently and how much they spend.
  • Reporting. See which campaigns and flows lead to orders, not just opens and clicks.

What data syncs between Klaviyo and Shopify

According to Klaviyo's Shopify integration guide, customer profiles and order data flow from Shopify into Klaviyo. If you turn on the optional reverse sync, Klaviyo can send names, email addresses, phone numbers, email and SMS subscription status, locale and custom profile properties back to Shopify.

Onsite tracking, delivered through a Klaviyo app embed in your Shopify theme, adds behavioral events such as Viewed Product, Active on Site, Added to Cart, Viewed Collection and Submitted Search. These are the events that power browse and cart abandonment flows, so the integration is not really finished until onsite tracking is on.

How to set up the Klaviyo Shopify integration

Before you start

  • Have admin access to both your Klaviyo account and your Shopify store.
  • Decide which Klaviyo list will hold new email subscribers. This should be the list that triggers your welcome series.
  • Check your privacy policy and consent wording, especially if you sell into markets with strict consent rules.

Connect the store

  1. In Klaviyo, open Integrations, choose to explore apps, search for Shopify and start the installation.
  2. Enter your store address in the yourstore.myshopify.com format and click to connect.
  3. Sign in to Shopify if asked, review the permissions and install the app.
  4. Return to Klaviyo to finish the setup.

Choose your sync settings

  1. Turn on email subscriber sync so customers who accept marketing at checkout or through Shopify forms are added to your main list.
  2. Turn on SMS subscriber sync if you plan to use SMS, and send those subscribers to a separate list.
  3. If you sell in several countries through Shopify Markets, turn on the markets sync so catalogs for each market come across.
  4. Decide whether to sync profiles from Klaviyo back to Shopify. Syncing all profiles creates new Shopify customers for every Klaviyo profile, so many stores choose to sync only profiles that already exist in Shopify.

Turn on onsite tracking

  1. In the onsite tracking section, tick the option to track behavioral events.
  2. Click to turn it on. Klaviyo sends you to your Shopify theme, where you switch on the Klaviyo app embed and save.
  3. Back in Klaviyo, refresh the page and look for the confirmation that the embed is active.
  4. In Shopify, check that the customer privacy settings allow these events to be attributed to profiles.

Test it

Browse the store in a private window, sign up with a test email, add a product to the cart and place a test order. Within a few minutes, the profile in Klaviyo should show the browsing events, the checkout and the order. If any event is missing, recheck the app embed before you build flows on top of it.

The first five flows to build

FlowTriggerPurpose
Welcome seriesJoins the main listIntroduce the brand, set expectations, encourage a first order
Abandoned checkoutStarted checkout, no orderRecover buyers who were close to paying
Abandoned cartAdded to cart, no checkoutRemind shoppers of the items they picked
Browse abandonmentViewed product, no cartBring back interested visitors with that product
Post purchasePlaced orderThank, explain delivery and care, ask for a review, suggest a next product

Start with Klaviyo's prebuilt versions of these flows, then edit the copy and design to match your brand. Add a win back flow for lapsed customers once the first five are running well.

Write messages that sound like a person

The most effective flow emails are short and specific. Show the exact product the shopper looked at, answer the question that probably stopped them, such as delivery time, returns or sizing, and give one clear button. Discounts work, but leading every flow with one trains customers to abandon carts on purpose.

A short summary of the points covered further down.

Segments worth creating early

  • Engaged subscribers: people who opened or clicked recently. Send most campaigns here to protect deliverability.
  • First time buyers: one order only. Focus on a second purchase.
  • Repeat customers: two or more orders. Offer early access rather than discounts.
  • Lapsed customers: no order in a period that fits your buying cycle.
  • Product interest: viewed or bought a particular category.

Cost: what drives your Klaviyo bill

Klaviyo pricing is based mainly on the number of active profiles you keep and, if you use SMS, on message volume. Plans and allowances change, so check the current pricing page rather than relying on older articles. Two habits keep costs in line: suppress or remove profiles that have not engaged in a long time, and avoid importing large old lists that were never opted in.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping onsite tracking, which leaves browse and cart flows with nothing to trigger them.
  • Running two email tools at once, such as Shopify Email and Klaviyo both sending abandoned cart messages to the same person.
  • Sending every campaign to every profile, which hurts inbox placement over time.
  • Ignoring domain authentication. Set up a branded sending domain with the DNS records Klaviyo asks for.
  • Never reviewing flows. Products, prices and policies change. Flows written at launch often still promise things the store no longer offers.

Do you need a developer?

The integration itself is designed for store owners and needs no code. Help is useful for the work around it: theme changes for signup forms and consent wording, custom events that Shopify does not send by default, data cleanup before migration from another email tool, and connecting Klaviyo to other systems such as a CRM or ERP.

Our Shopify developers handle the store side of this work, including themes, checkout and integrations, and our digital marketing team can build and run the flows and campaigns. For an example of a multi market Shopify build, see the EGO Sustainable case study, a bilingual store selling across five markets. If you are not sure where the store is losing buyers, start with a checkout teardown or get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Yes.

Klaviyo connects to Shopify through an official app, and the setup runs from the Integrations area in Klaviyo. You enter your store address, approve the app in Shopify, choose which subscribers to sync and switch on the onsite tracking app embed in your theme. Most store owners can finish it without a developer. Building useful flows and segments afterwards takes more time than the connection itself.
