How to connect Klaviyo to WooCommerce with the official plugin, test that events arrive, build the first flows and plan for costs, conflicts and data rules.

The Klaviyo WooCommerce integration connects your WordPress store to Klaviyo through the official Klaviyo for WooCommerce plugin, so orders, checkouts, product views and marketing consent flow into Klaviyo in real time. You install the plugin, connect your Klaviyo account, choose your consent settings and run a test order. From there you can build automated emails and SMS, such as abandoned cart reminders and post purchase follow ups, based on what each customer actually did in your store.
This guide covers the setup, how to test it properly, the benefits worth building toward and the limitations you should plan for.
Why connect Klaviyo to WooCommerce
WooCommerce sends order emails well, but it is not built for behavioral marketing. Klaviyo fills that gap. Once the stores are connected, each customer profile in Klaviyo carries their orders, the products they viewed, the checkouts they started and their consent status. That makes it possible to send fewer, more relevant messages instead of the same newsletter to everyone.
Before you start
Klaviyo's WooCommerce integration guide lists a few things to prepare:
- Log in to both your Klaviyo account and your WordPress admin, and log out of any other Klaviyo account so the wrong one is not connected.
- Temporarily turn off caching and redirect plugins during setup, because they can interfere with the connection.
- If your site uses a firewall or security plugin, allowlist Klaviyo's IP addresses so data is not blocked.
- Make sure WordPress and WooCommerce are reasonably up to date. Old versions are the usual reason a connection fails.
Take a backup before installing any new plugin on a live store, and if you have a staging site, run the whole process there first.
How to set up the Klaviyo WooCommerce integration
Step 1: Install the plugin
- In WordPress, open the WooCommerce Extensions area and search for Klaviyo.
- Select the Klaviyo for WooCommerce listing, add it through the WooCommerce Marketplace and add it to your site.
- Go to Plugins and activate Klaviyo.
Step 2: Connect your Klaviyo account
- Go to Marketing > Klaviyo in WordPress and click Connect Account.
- Log in to Klaviyo and confirm you are in the right account.
- Review the permissions Klaviyo requests for your store and approve them.
- Check that the correct account name appears on the integration settings page.
Step 3: Configure consent and settings
- Email consent: add a checkbox at checkout, choose the Klaviyo list that new subscribers join, and write a clear label.
- SMS and WhatsApp consent: optionally add consent checkboxes, choose their lists and add the required disclosure text.
- Currency: if you sell in several currencies, you can convert order values to one standard currency for cleaner reporting.
Click to complete setup. You can change these settings later from the WooCommerce integration page in Klaviyo. Once connected, turn your caching and redirect plugins back on.

Test the integration properly
Many stores connect the plugin and move straight to building emails. Test first, because every flow depends on these events arriving correctly.
- Open the store in a private window and add a product to the cart.
- Go to checkout and enter a test email address and phone number. Tick the marketing consent boxes if you enabled them.
- Place a test order using a test payment method or a manual payment option.
- Wait a minute or two, then check Klaviyo.
- Confirm that Started Checkout and Placed Order events appear under recent data, and that the test profile joined the lists you selected.
If events are missing, the usual causes are a caching layer serving old pages, a security plugin blocking requests, or a theme that changes the checkout heavily. Fix these before building flows.
Klaviyo also syncs your historical orders separately after connection, with a progress indicator in the integration settings. Wait for that to finish before judging segments based on past purchases.
What you can do once it is connected
Automation
Set up flows that run on their own: a welcome series for new subscribers, abandoned checkout reminders, a thank you and care guide after purchase, review requests and win back messages for customers who have not ordered in a while. Klaviyo's Started Checkout event includes a cart rebuild key, so abandoned checkout emails can send shoppers straight back to their filled cart.
Personalization
Show products related to what a customer viewed or bought, refer to their last order, or change the message for first time and repeat buyers. Keep it useful. A recommendation that clearly follows from a purchase feels helpful; one that reveals every page someone looked at feels intrusive.
Segmentation
Group customers by purchase count, recency, spend, product category or engagement. Send most campaigns to engaged subscribers only. It protects deliverability and keeps unsubscribe rates down.
Cross sell and upsell
Use purchase history to suggest accessories, refills or the next item in a range at the moment it is relevant, such as a few weeks after the first order rather than the next morning.
Reporting
Klaviyo attributes orders to the campaigns and flows that preceded them. Use that to cut messages that do not earn their place and to invest in those that do.
| Flow | Triggered by | What it should do |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome series | Joining the main list | Introduce the store and encourage a first order |
| Abandoned checkout | Started Checkout without an order | Bring the shopper back to their cart |
| Post purchase | Placed Order | Confirm what happens next, ask for a review |
| Replenishment | Time since a consumable was bought | Remind the customer before they run out |
| Win back | No order for a set period | Re engage lapsed customers |
Limitations and costs to plan for
Plan cost grows with your list
Klaviyo pricing scales mainly with the number of active profiles and with SMS volume. As the store grows, so does the bill. Clean out profiles that have not engaged in a long time and do not import old lists that never opted in. Check Klaviyo's current pricing page rather than older articles, since plans change.
Theme and plugin conflicts
Most themes work without changes, but heavily customized checkouts, one page checkout plugins and aggressive caching can stop events or consent checkboxes from working. Budget some developer time for testing on your actual theme.
Learning curve
Klaviyo is approachable, but flows, segments, consent rules and deliverability take time to learn. Start with three or four flows and expand once they perform, rather than building twenty at once.
Data protection
The integration moves personal data between systems. Make sure your privacy policy describes it, collect consent clearly, and follow the rules that apply to your customers, such as GDPR in Europe or CCPA in California. If you sell to customers in several countries, take advice on each market's requirements.
Ongoing maintenance
WordPress, WooCommerce, the Klaviyo plugin and your theme all update independently. After major updates, place a test order and confirm events still arrive. Also review flow content every few months so emails do not promise delivery times or policies the store has changed.
Feature differences between platforms
Klaviyo supports many ecommerce platforms, and not every feature behaves the same way on each. Before planning a campaign around a specific feature, check Klaviyo's documentation to confirm it is available for WooCommerce.

Our WooCommerce developers handle the store side of this integration, from checkout customizations to caching and plugin conflicts, and our digital marketing team can plan and build the flows. Frequently asked questions
It is the official connection between a WooCommerce store and Klaviyo, delivered through the Klaviyo for WooCommerce plugin.
It sends orders, started checkouts, product views and marketing consent from your store to Klaviyo in real time, and syncs past orders after you connect. You then use that data in Klaviyo to send targeted emails and SMS, such as abandoned checkout reminders and post purchase follow ups.
