Web DevelopmentWordPress vs Drupal: Which CMS Is Right for Your Business?WordPress vs Drupal compared on ease of use, content modeling, security, performance, ecommerce and cost drivers, with five questions to help you choose. What Is PHP Used For? Main Uses and Applications
What PHP is used for: dynamic websites, WordPress and other CMSs, ecommerce, web apps, APIs and scripts, plus when PHP is the right choice and when it is not.

PHP is used mainly to build the server side of websites and web applications: it runs on the web server, talks to databases, processes forms and logins, and generates the HTML each visitor sees. It powers WordPress, WooCommerce, Drupal and frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony, so it sits behind a very large share of content sites, online stores and business portals. It is also used for APIs, command line scripts and automation tasks.
This guide explains what PHP is, its main uses with examples, where it is a good choice in 2026 and where another language may suit you better.
What PHP is
PHP is an open source, server side scripting language designed for the web. According to the official PHP history, it was created in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf as a set of tools called "Personal Home Page Tools". The name now stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.
Unlike JavaScript running in the browser, PHP code runs on the server. When a visitor requests a page, the server executes the PHP code, which might read from a database, check who is logged in or calculate a price, and then sends plain HTML back to the browser. The visitor never sees the PHP itself.
The language has changed a great deal since its early days. Modern versions add strict typing, a just in time compiler, enums, readonly properties and much better performance. The supported versions page on php.net lists PHP 8.2 to 8.5 as supported in 2026, with PHP 8.5 released in November 2025. Running a supported version matters, because older ones no longer receive security fixes.
Why developers still choose PHP
- Open source and free to use. No license fees, and it runs on almost any host.
- Built for the web. Handling requests, sessions, cookies, forms and file uploads is part of the core language.
- Mature ecosystem. Composer for packages, frameworks like Laravel and Symfony, and CMS platforms like WordPress and Drupal.
- Wide database support. MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server and more.
- Easy hosting. Nearly every shared, managed and cloud host supports PHP.
- Large talent pool. Many developers know it, which makes hiring and handover easier.
The main uses of PHP
1. Dynamic websites
A static website shows the same content to every visitor. A dynamic website changes based on who is visiting and what they do: a logged in dashboard, search results, a basket, personalized recommendations. PHP was built for exactly this. It reads data, applies logic and builds each page on request.
2. Content management systems
This is PHP's biggest use. WordPress, Drupal and Joomla are all written in PHP. Every time an editor publishes a post or a visitor loads a page on a WordPress site, PHP is doing the work. Custom themes and plugins are written in PHP too, which is why WordPress development is largely PHP development.

3. Ecommerce stores
WooCommerce, which runs on WordPress, and Magento (Adobe Commerce) are both PHP platforms. PHP handles product catalogs, carts, checkout logic, stock updates and order emails. Our Gorgeous Flower Co case study is a WooCommerce florist with delivery dates and windows at checkout, loyalty points and subscriptions, all built on this stack. Stores like this are a common reason businesses look for WooCommerce developers.
4. Database driven applications
PHP connects web pages to databases and handles the four basic operations, often called CRUD:
- Create: saving new records, such as a sign up, a comment or an order.
- Read: fetching and displaying data, such as a product list or a user profile.
- Update: changing existing records, such as editing a profile or updating stock.
- Delete: removing records when a user or admin asks.
Modern PHP uses prepared statements through PDO or an ORM such as Laravel's Eloquent or Doctrine, which protects against SQL injection.
5. Web applications and SaaS products
Frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony give PHP developers routing, authentication, queues, testing and database tools out of the box. They are used for customer portals, booking systems, internal tools, marketplaces and SaaS platforms. Laravel development in particular is a popular choice for business applications that need to be built quickly and maintained for years.
6. APIs and back ends for apps
PHP can serve JSON APIs for mobile apps, single page applications and integrations. A Laravel or Symfony back end often sits behind a React front end or a native app.
7. Forms, sessions and authentication
Contact forms, login systems, password resets and user sessions are everyday PHP tasks. The language includes built in tools for sessions, cookies and password hashing.
8. Command line scripts and automation
PHP is not limited to web requests. It can run from the command line for scheduled jobs, data imports, report generation, sending emails in bulk or cleaning up files. Laravel's scheduler and queue workers are common examples.
9. Desktop applications, rarely
It is technically possible to build desktop apps with PHP, but it is uncommon and the tools are niche. For desktop software, other languages are usually a better fit.
Well known platforms built with PHP
- WordPress, the most widely used CMS, is written in PHP.
- Wikipedia runs on MediaWiki, which is written in PHP.
- Facebook started on PHP and later created Hack, a language derived from PHP, to run at its scale.
- Drupal, Joomla, WooCommerce and Magento power large numbers of government, publishing and ecommerce sites.

PHP compared with common alternatives
| Language | Typical strengths | Common uses |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | Built for the web, easy hosting, huge CMS ecosystem | CMS sites, ecommerce, business web apps |
| JavaScript (Node.js) | Same language front and back, real time features | APIs, real time apps, full stack JavaScript projects |
| Python | Readable, strong in data and AI | Data tools, machine learning, web apps with Django |
| Ruby | Developer friendly conventions with Rails | Startups and web apps |
| Java and C# | Strong typing, enterprise tooling | Large enterprise systems, Microsoft based stacks |
When PHP is a good choice, and when it is not
Choose PHP when
- You want a content site or store on WordPress, WooCommerce, Drupal or Magento.
- You need a business web application and want a mature framework like Laravel.
- You want affordable, widely available hosting and a large pool of developers.
Consider another language when
- The core of the product is heavy data science or machine learning, where Python is stronger.
- You need many long lived real time connections, where Node.js or Go are often simpler.
- Your organization has standardized on Java or .NET and wants one stack.
Common PHP mistakes to avoid
- Running an unsupported PHP version that no longer gets security fixes.
- Writing raw SQL with user input instead of prepared statements.
- Installing too many plugins on WordPress, which slows down every request.
- Skipping caching, so the server rebuilds the same page for every visitor.
- Leaving old custom code untested, which makes upgrades risky.
If you have an older PHP site and are not sure what state it is in, a codebase review will show which versions, plugins and custom code need attention.
