How the official Mailchimp Shopify integration works in 2026: what syncs, how to set it up, what it costs and the automations to build first.

The Mailchimp Shopify integration is the free Mailchimp Email SMS Marketing app from Intuit Mailchimp, installed from the Shopify App Store. It sends your store's customers, orders and discount codes into a Mailchimp audience so you can run abandoned cart emails, product recommendations, welcome flows and segmented campaigns from real purchase data. The app costs nothing to install; what you pay depends on your Mailchimp plan, which is priced by the number of contacts.
This guide covers what the connection does in October 2026, how to set it up without sending duplicate emails, which plan you need, and the practices that turn the synced data into sales.
What the Mailchimp Shopify integration does
Shopify runs your store. Mailchimp sends your marketing email and SMS. The app joins them so that every customer and order in Shopify also exists in Mailchimp, where you can segment and automate on it.
According to Mailchimp's own setup guide, the connection syncs the following:
| Data | What syncs | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Customers | Email, name, order details and custom fields such as birthday and phone | Real time |
| Orders | Past orders on first sync, then each new order | Real time |
| Customer tags | All tags or the ones you pick (optional) | Real time |
| Discount codes | Shopify discount codes | Every few hours |
| Site behaviour | Some activity, such as pages visited, through the app embed | Ongoing |
One Shopify store connects to one Mailchimp audience. If you run a second store, you repeat the setup and link it to a separate audience.
The Shopify and Mailchimp breakup, and the return
If you have read that Mailchimp and Shopify do not work together, that information is out of date. In March 2019 Mailchimp asked Shopify to pull its app over a dispute about Shopify's new partner data sharing terms, and the integration stopped working for existing users on 12 May 2019, as BetaKit reported at the time. For several years merchants relied on third-party connectors.
That is no longer the case. Mailchimp, owned by Intuit since November 2021, now publishes the official app on the Shopify App Store under the developer name Intuit Mailchimp. As of October 2026 the listing shows a 4.8 rating from 1,515 reviews. Mailchimp also calls its earlier version "Mailchimp for Shopify [Legacy]", and stores still on that version need a few extra steps to move to the current app.
How to connect Mailchimp to Shopify
The setup takes a few minutes, but a little preparation stops your customers from getting two welcome emails or two order confirmations.
Before you start
- You need Manager access or higher in Mailchimp.
- Pause any welcome automations tied to the audience you plan to link. Mailchimp advises recreating them after the sync rather than switching the old ones back on.
- Turn off any preselected marketing sign-up box at checkout, which Mailchimp recommends if you collect contacts there.
- Decide which audience the store should feed. Merging two stores into one audience is not supported.
Setup steps
- Open the Mailchimp app on the Shopify App Store, click Install and approve the access request.
- Log in to your Mailchimp account, or create one, and allow the connection.
- Choose the linked audience and the contact types to sync.
- Optionally tick Sync all tags, or select individual Shopify customer tags.
- Review the data field mappings, then click Sync now.
- On the sync overview page, turn on the app embed and confirm it is enabled in your theme settings, then save.
The first sync time depends on how many customers and orders you have. When it finishes, the Mailchimp app page in Shopify shows totals for products, customers and orders. If you later switch Shopify themes, check that the Mailchimp app embed is still on, because forms and site tracking depend on it.
Avoid duplicate emails
If you use Mailchimp's order notifications, turn off the matching Shopify notifications. The same goes for abandoned checkout emails: run them from Mailchimp or from Shopify, not both.
Mailchimp Shopify integration cost
The app itself is free. The cost is your Mailchimp subscription, which scales with contacts. Mailchimp bills you directly, not through your Shopify invoice. The Shopify App Store listing and the Mailchimp pricing page show four plans:
| Plan | Automations | Notable features for stores |
|---|---|---|
| Free | None | Up to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, sign-up forms, reports |
| Essentials | Up to 4 | Email templates, 24/7 email and chat support, SMS as an add-on |
| Standard | Up to 200 | Send time optimisation, behavioural targeting, predictive segments |
| Premium | Up to 200 flows | Advanced segmentation, multivariate testing, phone support |
Starting prices on the Shopify listing are $13, $20 and $350 a month for Essentials, Standard and Premium, though Mailchimp often runs introductory discounts and the real price rises with your contact count. Check the pricing page with your own list size before you commit.
For most stores, the Free plan is only a test. Without automations you cannot run abandoned cart or post-purchase flows, which are the main reason to connect the two tools. Essentials covers a small set of flows; Standard is where the full ecommerce toolkit, including predictive segments, becomes available.
Automations worth setting up first
Once the data is flowing, a handful of automations do most of the work. Build them in Mailchimp's automation flow builder and test each one with a real order.
| Automation | Trigger | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome series | New subscriber | Introduce the brand and first offer |
| Abandoned cart | Cart left without checkout | Recover the sale |
| Order follow-up | Completed purchase | Delivery info, reviews, care tips |
| Product recommendations | Purchase history | Second order |
| Win back | No purchase for a set period | Bring back lapsed buyers |
On abandoned cart emails, Mailchimp's feature page lets you choose a delay of 1, 6 or 24 hours before the reminder is sent, and it can add product suggestions based on your store's purchase data. A full-price reminder first, with any discount saved for a later email, protects your margin.
Best practices for Mailchimp and Shopify
Map the fields you will actually use
Review the data field mapping during setup. Birthday, phone number and location are only useful if they land in fields you can segment on. Sync the Shopify customer tags that mean something, such as wholesale, VIP or a product line, and leave the rest.
Segment on purchase behaviour, not just demographics
Good starting segments are first-time buyers, repeat buyers, customers who bought a specific product or collection, and people who subscribed but never ordered. Each needs a different message. On Standard and Premium you can also use predictive segments that estimate likely future buyers.
Respect consent
Syncing a customer is not the same as having permission to market to them. Only send campaigns to contacts who opted in to marketing, and keep the checkout sign-up box unticked by default. This keeps you closer to rules such as the EU GDPR and protects your sender reputation.
Design for mobile and keep templates on brand
Most shoppers read email on a phone. Use one clear call to action, product images that load fast, and a template that matches your store's look so the click from inbox to product page feels like one experience.
Test one thing at a time
Use A/B tests for subject lines, send times or the call to action, and change a single variable per test. Premium adds multivariate testing for stores with enough volume to make it meaningful.
Watch the sync
If the connection silently stops, abandoned cart flows keep emailing people who already bought. Check the sync status on the Mailchimp app page in Shopify regularly, and be careful when reinstalling the app, since a fresh sync can treat existing customers as new ones and drop them into welcome flows.
When Mailchimp is the right fit for a Shopify store
Mailchimp suits stores that want email, SMS, sign-up forms, landing pages and social posting in one tool, and teams that already know its editor. It also fits businesses that use QuickBooks Online, which the Shopify listing names as a supported connection. Shopify's own Shopify Email app and dedicated ecommerce email platforms are alternatives; compare them on your contact count and the automations you need rather than on brand name.
Whichever you choose, the gains come from clean data, a few well built flows and steady testing, not from the connection alone.
