In short

Entertainment products are judged in real time by a crowd. A cinema booking has to finish on a phone in a dark foyer. A conference programme changes on the day, and the change has to reach every attendee's phone as it happens. A venue's audio has to arrive in an attendee's ear with no delay worth noticing. Star Cinemas, Meecon and Ourcast Live each solved one of those.

What the sector asks of software

Three things every entertainment build has to get right.

Each one is drawn from a project on this site, not from a sector report.
01

The booking has to finish on a phone, quickly

Star Cinemas' old flow asked for a cinema, a film, a date and a time before showing a seat. We rebuilt it around the seat map, with showtimes as a filter, so a seat is chosen in under a minute across 16 venues and 100+ screens.

02

The programme changes on the day

Meecon's admin lives inside the attendee app, so an organiser can move a session or add a speaker from the floor, with the change pushed to every phone as it happens.

03

Real time means real time

Ourcast Live turns a phone into a personal assistive listening device: a venue broadcasts, attendees tune in and hear every word, with native iOS and Android apps and a Node.js backend on the client's own AWS.

Entertainment

STAR CINEMAS

Ticketing across 100+ screens, rebuilt so seat selection works on a phone in under a minute.

The old flow asked for a cinema, a film, a date and a time before it would show a single seat, which is three screens of commitment before any value. We rebuilt it around the seat map, with showtimes as a filter rather than a gate, and made the whole path work one handed on a phone in a dark foyer.

Events

MEECON

An event app with agenda, speakers, sponsors, polls and questions, plus an admin inside the app so organisers edit on the day.

Meecon puts the whole conference on a phone: events and sub events, speakers, sponsors, live polls and audience questions. The unusual part is the admin, which lives in the same app, so an organiser can change a session or add a speaker from the floor.

Accessibility

OURCAST LIVE

An assistive listening product that streams a venue's audio to attendees' phones in real time, with native iOS and Android apps and an admin for broadcasts.

OurCast Live turns a phone into a personal assistive listening device. A venue broadcasts, attendees tune in and hear every word clearly, with no extra hardware. Native apps on both platforms, a Node.js and MongoDB backend on AWS, and an admin for broadcasts, account types and interests.

Sector notes

What building for cinemas, venues and organisers has taught us.

Three products, three kinds of live audience. These are the things we would say to a cinema chain, a conference organiser or a venue before the first sprint.

01

Lead with the seat map, not the funnel

Star Cinemas' old booking flow asked for a cinema, a film, a date and a time before it would show a single seat: three screens of commitment before any value. Across 16 venues and more than 100 screens, each with its own layouts and pricing, that funnel was costing bookings on phones, where most of the traffic was.

We rebuilt the flow around the seat map, with showtimes as a filter rather than a gate, and made the whole path work one handed. From opening the site to a chosen seat now takes under a minute on a phone. The lesson travels to any ticketed product: show the thing people came for first, and let everything else narrow it.

02

Put the organiser's admin inside the attendee app

Meecon puts a whole conference on a phone: events and sub events, speakers, sponsors, live polls and audience questions. The unusual decision was where the admin lives. It is inside the same app, so an organiser can move a session, swap a speaker or add a sponsor from the floor, and the change is pushed to every attendee as it happens through Firebase notifications.

Live polls and questions during talks turned the audience from spectators into participants, and the organiser never had to leave the hall to find a laptop. For events, the ability to change the programme on the day is the feature that matters most and the one most apps forget.

03

Real time audio needs native apps and the client's own cloud

Ourcast Live turns a phone into a personal assistive listening device. A venue broadcasts, attendees tune in and hear every word clearly, with no extra hardware. Latency decides whether that works, so the apps are native, Swift on iOS and Kotlin on Android, and the broadcast backend is Node.js with MongoDB on EC2 with S3 media, with a Next.js admin for broadcasts, account types and interests.

The deployment lives on the client's own AWS account and is documented, so their team operates it without us. For a product that venues depend on during a live show, owning the infrastructure is part of the product.

What we build

From the seat map to the stage.

Each capability below has shipped for a cinema chain, a conference or a venue product.
Explain your project
  • Ticketing and seat selection

Seat maps first, showtimes as a filter, layouts and pricing per venue, built mobile first.

A seat is chosen in under a minute on a phone.

  • Event and conference apps

Agenda, speakers, sponsors, live polls and audience questions, with push for every change.

Attendees get the agenda, the polls and every change on their phone.

  • Organiser admin on the floor

Edit sessions and speakers from the same app the attendees use.

The programme changes from the hall, not from a laptop backstage.

  • Real time audio and streaming

Venue audio to attendees' phones with native apps and a broadcast backend.

Every word reaches the attendee's ear with no extra hardware.

  • Native iOS and Android

Swift and Kotlin where latency matters, Flutter where one codebase serves both.

Latency sensitive products run natively where it matters.

  • Deployment on your cloud

Documented delivery on the client's AWS account, so the product is theirs to run.

The platform runs on your AWS account and your team can operate it.

How it ships

How a ticketing, event or venue product ships with us.
