Case study · Payments

Pay at the counter. Give with every purchase.

A payments app where every purchase at a participating store sends a share to a charity the customer picks, and earns points toward rewards.

What we built
A customer payments app for iOS and Android, with the merchant portal, admin console and API behind it.
Platform
Flutter app, Next.js portals and a NestJS API on PostgreSQL.

In short

Customers link their bank, scan the store's QR code, add a tip for the staff if they want to, and confirm. Part of the payment goes to their chosen charity, and the points they earn move them up tiers, unlock rewards and place them on a leaderboard.

The brief

Giving had to be part of paying, not a step after it.

If donating meant a second app or another form, nobody would do it twice. The charity share and the rewards had to happen inside the payment itself.

What had to be true

  • Pay in a few taps

Scan the store's QR code, choose a tip, confirm. No card to take out.
  • Give without thinking about it

A share of every payment goes to the customer's chosen charity, or to the store's charity if they have not picked one.
  • A reason to come back

Points on every purchase, tiers to climb, rewards to redeem and a leaderboard to rise up.
  • One system for every side

Customers, stores and charities each get their own view, and the admin team runs the whole programme from one console.

What we did

We built the payment, the giving and the rewards as one flow.

Four connected products share one API, so a payment, its charity share and its points are recorded together.
01

Bank linking and QR payments

Customers connect their bank through Plaid, then pay any participating store by scanning its QR code, with an optional tip that goes straight to the staff.

Paying is a scan, not a checkout.

02

A charity share on every order

Each order splits automatically by the percentage the programme sets, and customers see their total donated and every gift in Charity History.

Giving stays visible, so it keeps happening.

03

Points, tiers and rewards

Spending converts to points at a rate the admin team sets. Points move customers up tiers, unlock rewards and achievements, and rank them on a leaderboard.

A loyalty programme built into the payment.

What changed

One payment, three outcomes.

What the finished product does with every purchase.
