How to connect Shopify to Instagram in 2026: the requirements, setup steps, product tagging, checkout, costs and fixes for common connection errors.

Shopify Instagram integration works through one free app: the Facebook & Instagram sales channel by Meta. You install it from the Shopify App Store, connect a Facebook Page and an Instagram professional account, and your Shopify products sync to a Meta catalog that powers an Instagram shop and product tags. Shoppers browse on Instagram, then check out on your Shopify store.
This guide covers what you need before you start, the setup steps as Shopify documents them today, how product tagging works, what it costs, and how to fix the errors that stop most stores. Everything is current as of October 2026.
Why connect Shopify to Instagram
Instagram is where a lot of product discovery now happens. Meta said in September 2025 that Instagram had passed 3 billion monthly active users, the first figure it had shared since 2022.
Connecting your store turns that audience into a sales path rather than a brand channel only:
- A shop on your profile. Visitors tap View Shop and browse your catalogue without leaving the app.
- Tagged products. A tag on a post or story opens the product details, so a buyer is one or two taps from your checkout.
- One catalogue. Prices, descriptions and stock come from Shopify, so you do not maintain a second product list.
- Better ad tracking. The same channel installs the Meta pixel and the Conversions API, which feed purchase data back to your Meta ads.
Shopify Instagram integration requirements
Most failed setups come from a missing requirement, not a technical fault. Shopify lists these in its requirements and considerations page, and they follow Meta's own commerce eligibility requirements.
| Requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Live Shopify store | The online store cannot be password protected |
| Valid sender email | Set in your Shopify notification settings |
| Facebook Page | Your business needs its own published Page |
| Business portfolio access | Your Facebook login needs full control of the Page and portfolio |
| Instagram professional account | Linked to that Facebook Page |
| Supported country | Your business must be in a country Meta supports for shops |
| Compliant products | Every item must pass Meta's Commerce Policies |
| Buyable on your domain | Products must be purchasable from your verified website |
Country support
Shops on Facebook and Instagram are not available everywhere. Check Meta's list of supported countries before you plan a launch. If your business is outside it, setup stops with an error saying Meta does not offer shop or catalogue setup in your region.
Product rules
Meta reviews each product against its Commerce Policies. Categories such as weapons, adult products, healthcare items and many digital goods are restricted or banned. Rejected items can be appealed, but read the policy first if you sell anything in a grey area.
Account presence
Meta also looks for an established, active presence. A brand new Instagram account with few posts can be rejected even if everything else is in order, so it pays to post consistently for a while before you apply.
How to connect Shopify to Instagram step by step
These steps follow Shopify's current setup guide for the desktop admin.
1. Prepare your accounts
Switch your Instagram account to a professional account in the Instagram app if it is still personal. Then link it to your business Facebook Page from the Page settings or Meta Business Suite. Confirm that the Facebook login you will use has full control of both the Page and the business portfolio.
2. Install the sales channel
In the Shopify admin, go to Settings then Sales channels and click Shopify App Store. Search for Facebook, then click Add channel (or Add app).
3. Start setup for Instagram Shopping
The channel offers separate features: Facebook Shop, Instagram Shopping and Meta Marketing. Click Start set up on the one you want first, then Connect account and sign in to Facebook.
4. Connect your Meta assets
Select the business portfolio, Facebook Page, Instagram account, ad account and catalogue the feature needs. If you have more than one portfolio, pick carefully: an asset already connected to another store will block setup.
5. Accept the terms and finish
Accept the terms and click Finish setup. Your shop then goes to Meta for review. Neither Shopify nor Meta publishes a fixed review time, so plan for a wait before you can tag products.
6. Publish products to the channel
Choose which products are available to the Facebook & Instagram channel. They sync to one Meta catalogue that serves your shops and your ads. Making a product unavailable to the channel removes it everywhere at once.
7. Set up taxes
Since 26 August 2025, Meta is no longer a marketplace tax facilitator. Shopify says you are now responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on Facebook and Instagram orders, so review Settings then Taxes and duties before you sell.
How Instagram product tagging and checkout work
Once your shop is approved and your catalogue is connected, you can tag products. According to Shopify's Instagram Shopping documentation:
- You can tag products in Instagram posts and stories.
- Story tags use the shopping sticker, and only image stories can carry one. Video stories cannot be tagged.
- A tagged product must exist in both your Meta catalogue and your Shopify online store.
- For products with several variants, you choose which variant the tag points to.
- Names, descriptions and prices on Instagram must match Shopify. Change them in Shopify and they sync across.
Checkout happens on your store, not inside Instagram. A shopper taps a tag or browses View Shop, selects Checkout on seller's website, and lands in your Shopify checkout. That means your own payment methods, discount codes and order flow apply, and the order appears in Shopify like any other.
Feature summary
| Feature | Where it appears | Where the sale happens |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram shop | View Shop on your profile | Shopify checkout |
| Product tags | Feed posts | Shopify checkout |
| Shopping sticker | Image stories | Shopify checkout |
| Catalogue ads | Instagram and Facebook ads | Shopify checkout |
What the integration costs
The connection itself is free. Shopify states that the Facebook & Instagram channel is free with all Shopify plans, subject to store eligibility. You still pay your normal Shopify plan and payment fees, because sales go through your Shopify checkout.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Facebook & Instagram sales channel | Free |
| Instagram professional account | Free |
| Instagram and Facebook ads | Your chosen budget |
| Photography and video | Varies by who produces it |
| Agency or developer help | Varies by scope |
Most stores start organically and add a paid budget once they know which products and formats sell.
How to turn shoppable content into sales
Connecting the accounts is the easy part. Sales come from content people want to stop on. A few habits help:
- Tag consistently. Add product tags to every post that shows a product. An untagged product photo leaves the buyer to search for it.
- Show the product in use. Short videos and real context sell better than plain packshots, and Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, credited messaging, Reels and recommendations for most of its recent growth.
- Answer messages fast. Many buyers ask about sizing, delivery or stock in DMs before they buy. Slow replies lose orders.
- Work with creators who fit. A creator whose audience matches your buyer can introduce products far better than a large but unrelated account.
- Use Live for launches. A live session lets you show products and answer questions in real time.
- Keep the catalogue clean. Clear titles, accurate prices and good images reduce rejections and make tags look trustworthy.
Fixing common Shopify Instagram connection errors
Shopify documents the messages that block onboarding. The most common ones and their fixes:
| Error | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| Instagram account not eligible for commerce | Check Meta's eligibility rules and account activity |
| Not an admin of the business account | Ask the portfolio admin to give you full control |
| No shop or catalogue setup in your region | Confirm your country is on Meta's supported list |
| Asset already connected to another store | Disconnect it from the other Shopify store first |
| myshopify.com domain already in use | Remove the domain from the other business portfolio |
| Account name not allowed | Rename it without special characters or Meta brand words |
| Login disabled in an embedded browser | Connect from a desktop or mobile browser instead |
If you see a generic "something went wrong" message, Shopify suggests removing the channel, removing Shopify from Business Integrations in your Facebook settings, signing in to only one Facebook account in a private window, and reinstalling. If that fails, use the Get Support link inside the channel.
